Back To The Future
Writers and crystal balls
Writing books involves so much more than putting words on a page, one after another after another. After months and years of feedback and revisions, if you publish that book, now you must change hats and transform from introverted wordsmith to social butterfly/salesperson. Not an easy transition. It always makes me think of Clark Kent stepping into a phone booth as a mild-mannered reporter and emerging as a superhero. He made it look easy, right?
Make No Mistake: The Novel, has been out in paperback for over nine months now and I’ve been learning more about marketing every single day. I’ve made a conscious choice to keep my approach low key so I’ve only done a couple of book signings and a few events. One of those events is coming up this week.
On April 9, I’ll be presenting at the Penticton Library about my book and three others: 1984, Fahrenheit 451 and The Handmaid’s Tale. Pretty exalted company. The one thing all four books have in common is the authors’ apparent ability to predict the future.
I’m excited about this conversation because I’m curious to hear readers’ thoughts on the books, the predictions and how they think these writers managed to foresee the future.
If you’ve read any of the four books, what are your thoughts? Do some authors have a crystal ball? Is there magic afoot? Or is something else at play?
Drop a note in the comments. I’d love to hear from you.
